A partir del año 1.916, en la República Argentina la política ferroviaria adquiere un nuevo enfoque, el Presidente Hipólito Yrigoyen se propone impulsar el desarrollo de nuevas regiones nacionales mediante la extensión de líneas de fomento. El 14 de marzo de 1.921, ratificado por todo el gabinete, y “sin sanción legislativa”, ordenó la iniciación del tramo Rosario de Lerma – El Gólgota (luego Ing. Maury), para cuyos 43 kilómetros destinó cinco millones de pesos. Este histórico decreto fue el punto de partida de múltiples imputaciones y de una de las más extraordinarias hazañas técnicas, si la medimos por el equipo disponible: pico, pala, carretilla,barreta , dinamita y camiones de limitada capacidad de carga. Trepar hasta los 4.475 metros en Abra Chorrillos explica cumplidamente la leyenda que evoca el mítico nombre de Huaytikina.
El 31 de marzo de 1.921 el Ingeniero Richard Maury, norteamericano de Filadelfia nacionalizado argentino y sus colaboradores se hicieron cargo de la obra.Con un plantel de personal que totalizaba 1.300 operarios y empleados, con muy buenos salarios para la época. Durante los casi 27 años en que se desarrolló esa obra gigantesca que fue el ferrocarril Huaytiquina. Llevó a cabo una verdadera hazaña técnica, plasmada en el creativo y audaz trazado de 42 estaciones, 13 viaductos (entre ellos los del río Toro y el Polvorilla); 32 puentes de acero, 21 túneles .
Finalmente el 17 de enero de 1.948 se unieron los rieles en Socompa, y el 20 de febrero se celebró la inauguración integral del Trasandino del Norte con la asistencia del Ministro de Obras Públicas, Gral. de Div. Juan Pistarini, quien presenció la celebración en la estación limítrofe. Dos días despues, el domingo 22 de febrero, a las 0:15 hs, salía de San Miguel de Tucumán, y a las 11:05 hs. del mismo día partía de Salta, el tren número 231 de pasajeros que sería el primer servicio regular de esta línea con conexión a Antofagasta, aunque al principio en combinación con un coche motor del lado chileno.
